2023 Project Showcase Lineup
REACH, 2023 - FACILITATING SEXUAL HEALTH CLASSES FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
VERONICA REYES AND NINA PARSEE
Despite a California state law requiring sex education, many schools fail to comply with the standards of the unfunded mandate. REACH, or Reproductive Education and Community Health, is an organization dedicated to promoting equity by facilitating sexual health classes for middle and high school students. Partnered with Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, more than thirty trained sexual heath educators teach twelve lessons of the state-approved curriculum. The district’s predominantly BIPOC students reside in historically underserved areas of Central Los Angeles, where the annual family income is among the lowest in the city. Ultimately, disseminating this foundational knowledge is imperative to improving gender equality, disrupting generational cycles, and empowering underserved communities.
Reach was selected as the winning project for 2022-2023, receiving $3000 in funding from GDL.
MEDICAL FREEDOM NOW, 2023 - BREAKING DOWN THE INFORMATION BARRIER AND CONNECTING INDIVIDUALS WITH RELEVANT RESOURCES
BRANDEN BOHRNSEN AND BEN CHLARSON
The vast majority of California's undocumented population are uninsured. Through a web-based conditional logic survey, MedicalFreedomNOW breaks down the information barrier, and connects users with a list of relevant and reputable resources based on their eligibility criteria and needs. In prioritizing privacy and efficiency, accessing the survey does not require any form of identifiable information, and the survey does not record any of the information inputted. After accessing their resources, users can then download the filtered list as a PDF, or map their resources on the hardware-friendly mapping software built into the website.
Connect2equip 2023 - A WEB BASED EFFORT TO CONNECT HEALTH FACILITIES WITH DONATED MEDICAL SUPPLIES IN COACHELLA VALLEY
MELODIE AHN, FRANK WOODS, AND NATHAN LEE
Our team’s proposal focuses on the farmworker population of Coachella Valley and recognizes the necessity of providing both tangible and informational health resources in order to holistically meet the needs of this community. Our project takes the form of a website designed to connect existing healthcare facilities and non-profit organizations in Coachella Valley with external organizations that donate free medical supplies. A second component of our website aims to provide printable posters, flyers, and other infographics that de-mystify policies surrounding Medi-Cal and Medi-Care qualifications and inform farm workers of health and occupational safety practices.
